I don't recommend mixing anything in the Corid water. ACV is not something that does all of the good that some profess it does, like a miracle drug. I used to put it in my water every day religiously until I found out that it could actually cause problems in mineral absorbtion if used constantly. With coccidiosis, their little intestines are bleeding, painful, and irritated, so ACV would be something to avoid. I don't use DE, but be a little careful since it can irritate the lungs.Thank you for the help an links! Would it be ok for me to add a tad of apple cider vinegar to the water with the Corid? What about some DE in the mash I'm giving? We cleaned out our isolator from the girl that passed over night and already have another in there. She's very early on in her symptoms, so I am praying for the best! She'sand drinking freely at the moment, but she started still and didn't startle when I tested her, so I brought her in for early intervention.
I've lost three in the last week. The first two I wasn't around when it happened - just found them dead. The third I found weak and lethargic. Brought it in the house, and it died a half hour later. This morning I have one that has the same symptoms, except she won't hold her head up - kinda like you are describing. I'll be surprised if she makes it through the day. I ordered Corid after the first two. I wish it would get here already. I will never be without it again, that's for sure. I might have been able to prevent this latest chicken from getting sick. She's my favorite.
I hope your flock rebounds, and you don't lose any others.
Can't you get it at your Tractor Supply or Southern States? Ampromed is another brand. Di-Methox is sulfamethoxine and I would use it or even Sulmet if I was desperate.I've lost three in the last week. The first two I wasn't around when it happened - just found them dead. I guess it's possible but the amount of amprolium in medicated starter is not enough to prevent an outbreak anyway. Chicks can and do come down with a case of coccidiosis while on medicated starter, so if that's what's going on with your birds they may have come down with it even if they had continued the medicated starter.
They are young to be eating layer feed already, it may sound contradictory but all the extra calcium is not good for young growing birds. I'd save the layer for when they start laying and get them back on a starter/grower feed for now.
The Corid should clear things up provided they have not progressed to far. Have you been able to start it yet? I wouldn't want to be waiting any longer to start some form of treatment.
Well she may have something else going on other then or in addition to coccidiosis, but still complete the course of treatment so you can at least rule that out. Do not feed any milk products while your are treating with Corid. Milk products can indeed coat the intestines which can potentially make the Corid less effective. The coccidia protozoa invade the intestinal wall so you don't want to be giving anything that will potentially coat the intestines and thereby possibly even offer some protection to the coccidia. Hopefully she will pull through, just keep giving her the medicated water with the dropper as often as you can during the day.I did start the Corid around noon today for my isolated bird and the rest of the flock. I am using Corid only in their water, stopped electrolytes. I did get my food grade DE today though and mixed some in their food. It doesn't seem like it would interfere with the medicine and could only help. I also sprinkled some around their coop and yard.
My inside hen who is the most I'll is still hanging in there tonight. She's eating well and drinks from an eye dropper when offered. She hasn't really been going after the water in her pen though. I gave her a small tablespoon of cottage cheese for fat and protein. Also hoping the milk will coat her stomach a bit while the medicine does its thing. If she makes it through the night I think she'll make it.
Her mainn symptom that bothers me is her posture. When she lays down, her butt sticks way up in the air. Like her back is arched making her tailfeathers point straight up. It looks bizarre!
