does anybody on here come close to substaining there flock on nothing but what you are producing on your property?

im not yet but i have lots of seed im planting this spring and a cistern to help me in the right direction.
i have corn, sorgum, sunflowers, greens, lettuce, millet, and others (all organic, non-hybrid)

major problems are storing food over winter, calcium, birds, and time.

anybody have similar plans?

what are you planting/ what else should i plant?

You need to provide more protein. If you're sticking with a vegetarian diet for them, you could plant legumes. Otherwise you could look at culturing some type of worms, insect larva or insects. They also eat fish and meat.

ok they are free ranged, but they dont get much in the winter on free range. is there protein in grains? and green stuff? how do vegetarians live on it?

People that don't eat any animal protein at all, eat legumes to get enough protein.

Chickens are omnivores, not herbivores. Left to free range, they eat small animals, birds, reptiles, worms and insects.
