Flogging bantam rooster

Hello all!
I am new to the chicken world. I have 1 bantam rooster, 1 bantam hen, 3 rhode island reds, 2 isa browns. We raised our chickens from the time they were two weeks old up. Our rooster has been very friendly. However we have a hen that started laying an egg a day this past week. We still haven't had an issue with the rooster. Today I went to clean the coop. Our rooster started attacking me! At first it was just a couple times, then it continued to get worse and I had to get my husbands help. Not sure how to get him to stop? Any advice?! Are bantams usually an aggressive bird?

It depends on the type of bantam, and not usually. He may have just been protecting the nest, I have had a few r oosters calm around people, but once I got close to the nest, the would attack me

To be honest I'm not sure what kind of bantam he is.He looks like this picture with the feathered feet. Normally, he will flap at me when I am bent down cleaning the bottom of the coop and not paying attention. But today he kept doing it multiple times. When I brought them food and water, I couldn't even put the food in the coop.

He looks like a Mille Fleur D'uccle to me. He probably does think you are messing with the nests like mine when you're bent down. Probably the best thing to do is put him in his own cage when you're ready to clean the coop.

An attacking Rooster is not a good Rooster...I would cull him from your flock...His attacks will get more violent as he matures...

That's true, the only reason I let mine stay, is because they are part of my brooding team, or really high show quality. Then I put up with the attacking, I just suggested it for the OP in case they decide to put up with him

I can attest to this. Mine has been getting meaner and meaner. Im just waiting on my silkies to go broody, then his progeny will replace him.

Okay thank you all. Do you think anyone would want him? I'd give him away from free. I really don't want to kill him. He honestly has been a very nice calm rooster until this past week.

Welcome! I've had Belgian d'Uccles since 1992, and my first rooster was a total jerk, like yours is becoming. Life is too short to put up with this behavior!!! Since then I only keep nice boys, and I've never had another one like him. If you give him away, do so with full disclosure. He's tiny to be eaten, but a nice burial would be good. You won't ever be able to turn your back on him, and he could hurt a small child, or you, for that matter. Mary

Is there anyway to break the habit since it just started? Or is it just a lost cause?
