Pine shaving are an excellent floor covering, and what most BYCers use. If you put in dropping boards, you might be able to get through the winter without completely changing out all the litter. The bales can get expensive in a larger coop.

I'm new to chickens and bought the bales (big plastic bags) of pine shavings per recommendations of other chicken people. I'm very happy with the way they are working out. The shavings are tightly compressed within the bag and will fluff up to cover a lot of floor area.
