Floor of Chicken Coop

We use solid, covered with linoleum for easy cleaning. Don't use wire- it will hurt their feet.

You could just as easily put down some vinyl flooring and use pellets and that would solve the poo-stuck-in-their-feet problem and still be super easy to maintain. Pellets last forever, theres virtually no smell or clumping or wet spots, and you just scoop and broom it out when you want to change it. Personally I just throw down another thin layer until it starts coming out my coop door and then I empty it all out.

So far I've had to change the bedding once in 8 months.

I have a wood floor, but I have alot of shavings in mine, easy to keep clean, I go in every few days with a rake and mix it around....I havent changed shavings out in over 1mo...at the rate its going, I will in 4 more months.

I tried hay but it was dirtier and matted heavy with poop. not to mention it gets hot. And my girls wouldnt get in to lay...and when it dries it gets brittle and prickley.

Ok, so I have VERY small coop. I have enough room for 3-4 bantams, that is IT. Small backyard coop. SO, I really have no room to put the waterer, or their food tray down.. it all goes on the litter pan thingie that I pull out to clean.. but I'm afraid I'm putting too much weight on it, kwim? ALSO, Since my banties are small, , when they stand on the litter pan.. which is where they stand.. (one is a pullet, the other two are only 3 weeks old)... they won't be able to reach a higher waterer and feeder unless I put it on blocks.. but the blocks will be to heavy for the liter tray and might make it fall down and ruin my coop. There are two roosting poles in there, one I'm trying to remove and replace with a 2x3, but there is a groove in the wall I've got to remove first. But there really isn't room for their feeder and waterer in there... I have the regular one gallon one you get from feed store and a small/medium metal one I got from the feedstore too. Any sugestions so I don't ruin the floor of my coop?

I used hardware clothe for the floor in my chicken run, but I keep boards on it. It works great - the chickens always walk on the boards (which cover about half of the area of the run - they are loose; scraps left from construction) but as they walk they tend to kick off poop and debri onto (and through) the wire. I take them out as needed and spray them off or just flip them over and friction cleans them. I clean out under the coop often, I'm saving it for the compost pile/garden. I think of it as would I like to walk on wire?? I have seen where the wire as deformed the feet of chickens. I would put a wood floor it.

I am not sure if I can put this on here but I have a new coop that I would like to sell. I built it but I went ahead and built a bigger one for 20 chickens instead of 5-6 chickens 417-376-2378

We have a wood floor on our elevated coop, and it is covered in linolieum, and I use white shavings with Stall Dry. Stays really nice and is easy to clean with the dropping boards that are used under the roosts... most of the poop is there and not on the floor

so it doesnt stink!! I empty off the dropping board every day.

IF we had a ground floor....I would still have a hard floor...cement or something covered in lino with sand as the bedding.

Sand is too heavy tho to be used inside my coop

Our next coop, I will be having a removable bin filled with sand I think under the dropping board...and if we can swing a nice big shed to use I may try the sand bedding.
