About once per year I empty the coops spent shavings into garbage cans, cover, and strategically place them around the perimeter of their outdoor secured deep liter run.
My flock seems to refuse to walk on snow or ice.
That said, when the run is snow or ice covered, I liberally spread the spent shavings in the outdoor run in piles.
They happily spread the shavings, and enjoy the outdoors, often atop many inches of fresh snow...
