Congratulations !

I've been thinking about doing this . .. . How hard and expensive is it to do this?

I too would love to know how difficult this was... THANKS!!!

My family and I live in Crestview but we work in Destin and play in Fort Walton and Pensacola.

I dont have any birds yet but I think we are headed to the feed store as soon as hubby gets home to look at some. My inlaws (in Navarre) wanted us to pick a few up and aren't willing to wait until there are more available. The chickens will live there I guess and we'll be keeping two or three here for our own. (but we may order ours instead of getting them today) We're just trying to please the crazy mother in law ya know?
Do any of the people in our area know of local places to get chickens? Why pay shipping if I can get it here, even if I had to wait for a couple of months. Just curious.

they just take a swab and swab it in the mouth to get a sample of saliva I guess

then they take a blood sample from under the wing, and put that drop of blood mixed with some chemical and if it trn blueyou are done and your whole flock, but according to the guy, that is very unlikely, since that has not happened in Fl in a long time, I was scared for nothing

I would recommend it it's not that big o a deal.

None of the feed stores should have any until April / May.

Your best bet is to look on here, or go to the chicken show this weekend, or check on craigslist. If you wait until the feed stores are carring them - - - it will be possible to order them through some feed stores and not pay any shipping. You have to ask EACH feed store when you see the chicks arriving if they will order for you. I only have one store locally that will special order for me. The benefit to this is there is no min order quantity and No Shipping charges.

So once you are certified - - - do they come out yearly to re-test?

How long is your certification good for?

Aren't there some by products to being NPIP certified i.e. you can only purchase future stock from NPIP certified breeders ? ?

Does it restrict who you buy hatching eggs from too ? ?

THANK YOU for the information!

Mathace You have to be recertified each year. Mine is up in February. Its no big deal and it does help with sales and such. According to Florida law you cant bring poultry in the state without NPIP it doesnt say that for eggs. So buying out of state they have to be NPIP anyway and interstate it doesnt matter. It doesnt cost anything at all and they have never come back to check on my birds yet. I heard all the horror stories about not having it done but that is just a bunch of old wives tales.

I kept telling my husband that it was the wrong time of year but we had to go and try and find some, even if they are older, for my mother in law who doesn't understand that they aren't a year round thing. We went tonight and they had two cages of older one but they were all mixed genders and I don't know anything about how to eve begin to guess what might grow up to be a hen VS a rooster. We asked for a rough guess (so we have something to tell the mother in law) when them to start getting chicks. They had a list they put us on and the type of chicken we wanted and said they would call us. I think I about have my husband set on ordering instead
