Hi everyone!!! I am looking for someone that lives in the Port at lucie Fl area and can help me. I am a third grade teacher looking for eggs and an incubator to hatch in my class. There is not a better way to teach science than to see it first hand. I will return everything back to you. I work at a title one school and we have no funds to this this great project on our own! I'm brand new to this chicken endeavor, and have had my chicks in their outside coop for about a week. They're 5 weeks old. My question is about the filling the feeder. I am feeding them Chick starter … "start and grow" medicated crumbles. My question is this, do you guys dump the dust when refilling the feeder? It seems like they've picked out the bigger crumbles, and often it's "feed DUST" left at the bottom. Should I just keep adding to the top of the feeder, and let the chicks sort it out? Or should I dump the dusty bottom and start with fresh crumbles when filling the feeder? It seemed like there were several cups of "dust feed" left in the bottom this morning.

… and feed isn't cheap? Thoughts?

You can mix it with plain yogurt, they love it!

I put it in their nest boxes, in their grain, on their bodies, in their coop, in the areas they dust bathe, etc. You only need a little to be effective. And you don't do it every day. It is a very safe alternative to using chemicals. Even Pyrethrins are extremely toxic. Some of the cautions from vets stem from their lack of experience/education about using it. There is a lot of info on the internet regarding its uses. Be sure to only use food grade DE!

We are chicken addicts. We use Food Grade DE too. I started out around 50 years ago with 50 birds. My boyfriend at the time and I decided to go our separate ways so had to get rid of the birds. Several years ago my DH and I decided to get 6 birds. Before we knew it our flock had grown to around 400 birds. We initially invested in a styrofoam incubator then another then another and so on. We eventually bought a couple of cabinet incubators. We did sell one and kept one. That is when we became hatch-a-holics. It is so easy to increase your flock. We have sold quite a few birds and now are down to somewhere between 150 and 200 birds.

I too use DE everywhere in my coop, in their feed, and in their sand box. I am a new chicken keeper and still waiting for my first eggs and my perm coop to be completed. Long story as to how the chickens came before the coop. LOL I started with 8 and now have 6 more with 4 guinea chicks in the brooder. Of the total 14 chicks I have they are all different breeds except the 2 Buff Orpingtons and that is because I had to take 4 and they only had 3 different breeds available at the time (local breeder). I won't be able to tell them apart though. I am only allowed 20 on our 1 acre but my daughter says....no more....HUH!?!?? But..but... but... I can still have 2 more!! I so want a mille fleur.........

Good morning FL neighbors, this is my 1st time for checking in here since I added my name to the list of FL people. We just got our little farm started last August and now have 16 chickens, 6 goat (3 of them are now 3 weeks old, so cute), and 4 breeding rabbits (with more babies on the way there in a couple weeks).

I think we spend more time and more money at the feed store than the grocery store these days but we're enjoying ourselves very much. After living in a busy tourist town, working with the animals every day is a pleasure.

Welcome back! We only have barely over an acre and only have chickens for now and new to the whole world of chickens at that. Daughter wants a couple of goats for the granddaughters too but this whole chicken fever multiplication process has taken some time thus far as we just moved here in July. Yes, I do seem to stop at the feed store more than any other store other than Home Depot for home improvement and coop lumber. Either way, I now have a new miter saw, table saw, chop saw, and router for my coop building project(s). Well, ok, others will use them for the home improvement projects too....geesh!

I grew up in Tampa, FL and moved to the corn fields of Iowa for 14 years during which I raised my children. Now I am back home and keep moving farther and farther away from the city hustle and bustle and landed in Spring Hill on our little acre. This is as close as I am going to get in this life to the same type of country living I was used to in Iowa but love it so far. Perhaps the neighbor behind me will eventually sell and I can combine for more property....maybe.... Until then...just enjoying life, my granddaughters, my chickens, and my new home.

Hey a former Iowan here too. I was born in Iowa and still have quite a few relatives there. Beautiful state but too cold for me...sometimes this north FL is too cold too so guess it doesn't take much. I used to live in Key West and that's where I met my husband. Got burned out on the cruise ships, drunken tourists, the high cost of living and working 95-100 hours (each of us!) during a 7-day work week so we moved up here. Like it mostly although I do miss our friends down south. KW is where I first got interested in chickens
