Welcome! You are in good company! Many of us, myself included, are brand new and full of questions
while others are seasoned chicken experts. I am on the Space Coast on east Central Florida and I hope to get our first chicks this week - we have decided on Barred Rocks and Australorps and are hoping the feed store gets some of these two breeds in. Let us know what breeds interest you!
I am space coast too! I am brand new here and to chickens. My extended family had them when I was small but I have never had them myself. There's a farmers market in rt 1 that was very helpful. Near Rockledge gardens. What made u decide on those breeds? I'm curious about so much
Love it! Thank you!!!! I haven't begun any prep yet I promised my son I would tackle a few household things first. He's highly displeased as he says it's more pets and we already have a few lol. But I think it's more than that. Yay chickens!!!! Will u post lots of pictures?
I shall! As of right now, all we have up is the frame of my coop.
I too have a son - he's 8. How old is your little fellow? My son is rather excited about the chickens - he wants to hold the tiny balls of fluff. We are only getting six chicks, and hope of those six, we get at least four hens - just a tiny flock. We are only on 1/4 acre of land and have a small yard, so this fits us well.
What breeds were you looking at getting?
I have Silkies because of their reputation as "incubators disguised as feather dusters." Unless you plan to hatch chicks, or change your name to St. George the Dragon-Slayer, probably best to leave Silkie hens be. I just had another go broody today. I went out to gather eggs, saw her set firmly on a golf ball, and asked, "Are you going broody too?" (There are four others in the cubby boxes brooding.) Her response was a loud squawk and a peck at my hand - good thing her aim is not as good as two others! When I checked eggs for the marks on the end, I noticed one of the marked ones has pipped already, and the chick started peeping, which of course gets the hens riled up more.I wanted silkies for the fluff
Arghyla,My son is 15. He will be charmed by the fluff no doubt lol but he's annoyed that I procrastinate. We only have 1/5 of an acre lol and a pool so it will be challenging. I bought this house a few years ago and I am loathe to sell and move bc we r comfortable here. But I would like a larger Amt of land I just am located in a convenient place right now....I wanted silkies for the fluff but I looked into those breeds and they sound much better...but fluff!!!!!!! We can only have 4 I don't think anyone would notice a few more![]()
