FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Hey everyone! I'm new to this whole chicken thing lol. I come to BYC often for information but I just found the Florida thread. I live in Live Oak, Florida ( North Florida). Can't wait to meet everyone!

I have to post this pic of my son and the chickens. This pic means alot to us even though it looks fairly mundane. My son has Down's Syndrome. He is terrified of the chickens. He will not pick up our 6 week olds and won't get close to these older ones. If I hold one he'll pet them but if they make ANY move he yells and jumps away.

So, enter this picture. He ASKED to feed them their scratch treat. I gave him the bowl expecting him to basically dump it, run and watch from a distance but that's not what he did. He grabbed hands full and spread it out in front of him and let them get close to him. They got within 2' before he started backing away but that's 6' closer than any other day.

I'm so proud of him working through his fear.

That is awesome. Hopefully he will trust the birds more and more the more he interacts with them even with the food bowl. I have some friends who told their kids chickens were mean and would bite anyone that came near them and the kids were terrified of the birds. They came over and I had birds running around outside of their coops and pens the birds wouldn't get too close to them but I put some scratch in my hand and the birds would come up and eat the scratch out of my hand so they tried and the chickens were hesitant but did come and get some treats. They were actually surprised that the birds weren't attacking them like they were told.

My girls enjoying the warmer weather after the cold snap. Coop is almost finished. Just need to add the front air vents for flow to the back window and the outside roost. Not really a fun journey

but glad it's done and soon my little ones can join the bigger girls.
Gorgeous! We just got barnyard red paint for the coop and run! the coop they are in now will be extended, I'd love to make a run that extends from the backyard out to both sides of the house!

I love the red coupe's but blue is my favorite color so we went that direction. Now that the basics are done we started talking about adding extensions and before we know it our entire yard will be the chickens yard!!

. We're taking bets on which nest box they will use most. We also have a baby video monitor with temperature gauge so we can keep an eye on them. It helps me hear what's going on out there too

I like the curtains! I currently don't have them on my boxes, what do they help with? I'm curious if I should add them.

HAHA! Adorable! i volunteered at a child care place in Arlington that has chickens and the owner had no clue what she's doing. She is trying to hatch eggs and doesn't have an incubator or single broody lady in her coop so i cleaned it up, made some curtains, brought in more hay, water and feed. hopefully with the right conditions one will want to sit! good news in that i have leftover materials to make my girls some curtains once they start laying!
