FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Mine sleep in their coop at night. I have ventilation on all 4 sides and I have a small fan that blows down to circulate the hot air up towards the vents. They don't mind the fan at all but the ventilation is high and wind wouldn't blow directly on them, hard anyway.

Very pretty coop. I love the color and Dragon flies! What kind of fan do you have in the coop? Do I understand that it blows up?

Thanks,
Wendy

We are in Kendall!

We have an open coop (chicken and welded wire on 4 sides) that sits under two lychee trees. I use pallets in A-frames for shade and protection. (see post above) My coop has selective areas of protection. The flock loves it when a storm blows in, especially the cold rainstorms we get in January and February.  If we did anything differently, we would just use milk crates for nest boxes.  Our hens like their nest boxes but the nest boxes are not as easy to clean out as my laziness would prefer. Fortunately, we have kids.

It's so nice to find others down here with chickens! Somehow everyone seems to forget that all good grows somewhere. We found a house to rent in Redland that is great. I finally have space to do the things I want. I had to resort to experimenting growing cotton in pots on a 5th floor balcony when I was a kid. Do you have any pictures of your coop?

Quote: My coop page hasn't been updated in a very long time. A lot of changes have happened over the years. We've added several coops. I now have 12 coops. No more. I'm getting too old for this. I love my birds and am going to cut back on my flocks. Good luck and have fun...

Thank you! I have to put color everywhere!
It blows down to circulate the air up to the vent. I have it clipped to the roost. I have a video monitor and there is well that shows temperature and the position it's in right now keeps it the coolest.

I like the use of the clippy desk can. I'm sure they have a more specific name than that, but we're silly, and saw 4am chickening. We were working on coop drawings, then searching the yard to find out why our not so pullet started sounding his new mini crow. <3 love that little crow! We found an owl, then I had to identify it, because again I must not think sleep is important, it was an eastern screech owl. In the past a nighttime commotion has meant a baby rat snake wanted to say hi, but always small. From what I read the owl is more than welcome to stay and eat rodents and bugs.

We have the black racers in our backyard and leave them alone. They/it hasn't messed with my chickens and they can't get to the eggs. We also have cottonmouth snakes and I read the racers keep them away!

Black racers or indigos are great for a yard, and I seem to remember that their populations have declined.
The rat snakes we moved out of the coop were too small to cause any harm, but the chicks were very agitated when it was in their coop. Growing up my parents had a few clutches of albino rat snakes, so they just got moved away from the coop.

Owls like chicken dinner too. Before I covered my pens something was getting in and killing birds. I looked and looked but couldn't find how anything could get into the pens and coops and finally figured out that what ever was killing the birds had to be going over the fence. My fence in electric so what ever it was had to be going over it. I put my game camera out and on the game camera was an owl killing a bird. I still have the video. I've lost a few birds to owls. I have since covered all of my pens and no loss from an owl since. I had a hawk fly in once with me standing there and killed a bird. No more with the pens covered.
