FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Her name is 'Sully' She was the size of a golf ball when I bought her. She now roams the backyard grazing all day and getting into mischief if she can. I have looked out the back window before and saw a white plastic patio chair moving across the backyard - Heeheehee! If a tortoise can see through it, they think they can go through it and she walks under chairs and they get stuck on her. They have NO consception of how big they are. I have heard of people having trouble with their torts pushing down the fence or digging under the fence. I have never had that problem. I have a 6ft wood fence around the backyard and she can not see through it, so she has no idea there is something on the other side. So she is content to stay inside the fence. Now if the gate is open, she will make a run for it! That happened once when there was a storm and the wind broke the latch on the gate and I did not know it. Luckily she was just down the road when I noticed it. I would have been devastated if I lost her. I have thought about getting her GPS chipped, just in case. I wonder how much that would cost?

I have seen Russians before, but don't know much about them. How big do they get?

Not big at all, the females usually max out at like 8". Lazy is not even close to that size yet since they grow so slow. I dunno about gps chips, but the regular rfid chips where it has your information in it in case she is found by a vet or animal control are pretty cheap. I've heard quotes around $20. We got it done for one of our cats before and it came free with his neuter. Sully sounds like a real character. And it's so true, Lazy will try to fit through any little opening, she's crazy. I love her though and I got her because I wanted a pet that will be with me my whole life, so though I haven't had her nearly as long as you've had your girl, I understand the attachment.

What do torts. eat? I have big garden with lots of greens. Ya'll are enablers.

I have an African Spur Thigh Tortoise, or Sulcata. She comes from a hot, dry region of Africa. I feed my tortoise 2 times a week - I feed her up to a whole head of Romaine lettuce depending on how big it is, any veggies I have in the fridge, maybe an apple or banana or some honeydew or cantalope, tomatoes. Plus approx 2 cups of Mazuri Tortoise diet soaked in water till soft. I then sprinkle either vitamin/mineral powder or calcium powder on top. The calcium powder is very important, without it she could develope Metabolic Bone Disease. The rest of the week she grazes in the backyard eating grass. That is what she is supposed to eat in nature, a high fiber diet. I also grow spineless cactus to giver as a treat - that is the ultimate "candy" for her, she LOVES it! And if can get to the plants that I am growing, she will eat them down to nubs! Heehee! She has done that before, I had to start over again.
