Y'all keep in mind that I'm in western West Palm Beach and I process chickens. I only do it for love, not for money.

I do my own surplus cockerels for my family's consumption, and will take other folks' cockerels for my table. I am also glad to have you here to learn how to process your own surplus cockerels & roos. Someone showed me how to process, and I'm glad to pay it forward by showing others the procedure.

I plan to do 6 chickens tomorrow, the weather should be really nice for this outdoor chore.

sounds good to me but if we do that the entrant must own at least one Naked Neck and LOVE it too.

My eldest daughter saw vultures in the neighbor's yard this morning, so we ran over to investigate and found the headless bodies of two full grown Muscovy drakes. While cleaning up the mess, which stretched the length of our property to our neighbor's, we found fresh foot prints in the soft ground, canine (dog or coyote), three inches long, with a three foot stride. It looks like there was only one. The ducks were not really eaten, which I think is typical of a dog attack. The scene looked so similar to when our goose was killed, I feel like it must be the same predator - so not a raccoon after all. The neighbor's chihuahua was barking like crazy last night, so much so I woke up and went outside to check. If I'd been more alert I might have sighted the killer. Tonight we made sure all the ducks went to the lake. It may take me some time, but I'll eventually find out whose dog is responsible, and I'll have about as much mercy as was given our poor Goosedown.

If you send me an email or private message, I can give you my old Egg dealer's contact. He's in Buckingham, kind of a trek, but you're not going to find much super close to you. You'll probably only find goat's milk in N Fort Myers, they advertise on craigslist, or at least used to. Also maybe check realmilk.com.

What duck, Jessica? I missed something.

Hey so.... random question. Has anyone had any issues with cats? My neighbor has this cat who she calls a kitten & she lets out most of the day. He is young, a little goofy, & chases birds but doesn't catch them. The other day he was creeping over to my chicken coop & on my property. My chickens free range, I have no fence, we're in a regular suburban neighborhood on 1/3rd of an acre. My chickens stay on my property. I chased the cat away & he seemed to respond to that. However, you know what they say about cats... they're curious.

I mentioned it to my neighbor... she responded with something a little too dismissive like, "oh goash, he's getting wild" and she almost thought it was funny. She mentioned that she was worried her cat might get intrigued by the chickens, & she's made jokes about hawks checking out my chickens in the past. Anyway, I suggested one of those bell collars & her boyfriend laughed & said that it would be easier to put bells on all the birds in the neighborhood. Eyeyeye.

Anyway, if you've encountered issues with others cats, how have you handled it?

If your allowed to have your chickens and no one has complained before. It sounds like to me that she don't care what happens to her cat and it just runs wild. Then what I would do what ever it takes to protect your livestock. That was the words right out of FWC office when I had called them about the Bobcat hanging around here.So if by all means it is ok for you to have chickens then by law you have the right to do what ever it takes to protect your livestock. If you call FWC they will tell you to call animal control on the cat because there is a leash law in florida for all 4 legged pets.Hope this has helped.

Oh really? That's interesting to know. So the people who have cats on leashes aren't crazy!? LOL! KIDDING! Thanks for all that great info.

I am a permit-holding chicken owner! Really, truly. The city inspected & everything.

Well by all means you have the right to do whatever it takes to protect your livestock.Call the FWC in Titusville. And they should be able to tell you what you can do to prevent any problems in the future. When I had called on the Bobcat I knew that it was a protected animal But they had said you can either call a trapper or take care of the situation yourself.Because you have the right to protect your livestock.Goodluck on your cat problem.
