I usually set these hens with eggs from my standard-sized layers. I have some purebreds as well as mixed-breeds, and several different breeds of standard-sized roosters. So the chicks are a lovely mix of large breeds, interesting colors & patterns. The pullets make nice layers of brown, green or tinted eggs, and the cockerels grow out very handsome, are usually well-mannered, and welcome in the yard or on the table.
Although I also have a nice little flock of mixed-breed bantams I don't set their eggs. I wouldn't mind having more of these bantam hens, they lay tasty eggs & often go broody for me. But I don't have much use for the little roosters. There are already 5 of them that we cannot bear to send to the table, I can't risk having the kids fall in love with any more! And they just aren't really worth the effort to process, they don't have much meat on them.
This year I have had broody hens hatch eggs from my Khaki Campbell ducks, but I haven't had much luck selling them. (Psst! Wanna buy a duck?) So I don't want to set more of them right now. I have also had hens hatch eggs from my Embden goose with great success! But the goose has stopped laying, has gone broody herself on her last 3 eggs.
I would like to have some different eggs for hatching now, would like to do someone the favor & let my broodies hatch eggs for them and care for their chicks. But if none are offered I will set them with our own eggs again.
