Thank you Stan, that's why I like you you have great ideas, but I won't forget you credit is yours, chicks on me, just let me know how many lol

If anyone from Escambia County is lurking on here, we would appreciate your support in making our Board of County Commissioners aware of the presence of responsible chicken keepers! Ironically, chickens are legal in the City of Pensacola. They've always been legal there, there was previously a large setback that made it difficult for the average residential property owner to meet. Last year, they lowered the setback, but imposed other restrictions such as no roosters. A group of us campaigned for the county to follow suit. This was before an election and many of the county commissioners assured us that they were on our side and they just wanted to "wait and see" how the new ordinance worked out for the city. Our group leader was assured that she would be informed before it came up for a vote again. Then a few days ago, with no warning, they voted against any changes to the ordinance. The animal control department is afraid of an increased workload so they presented a PowerPoint estimating that it would cost nearly a HALF MILLION DOLLARS to implement changes necessary to handle all the nuisance chickens!!

We are going to the next commissioner meeting to express our displeasure. Unfortunately, our numbers aren't that great. There is little awareness in the community about the laws. Many people assume that it's already legal in the county because of all the press about it being legal in the city. The online newspaper for the rural part of the county just writes articles that keep getting country people scared that any changes will make things more restrictive for them when, actually, even in the rural areas they are already required to have at least 1.5-2 acres to own chickens.

Our Facebook page is here - https://www.facebook.com/escobackyardchickens?fref=ts . The meeting is Thursday, February 21st, 4:30 p.m. at the Escambia County Governmental Building, 221 Palafox Place, Pensacola, FL. Any support from locals or advice from anyone on how to refute the animal control department's claim of exorbitant costs to contain chickens would be appreciated!

Thanks! I'm in Escambia County and I thought chickens were legal also! Will do my best to attend. I'll help spread the word, I've come to know of a few friends who own chickens too.

Thank you, CluckerCam! That's great to hear! If you and your friends can't make the meeting, you could call or email the county commissioners. They claim they haven't heard from any constituents wanting the ordinance changed, even though several of us went to a meeting last fall and many have called their offices. Grover Robinson is our biggest supporter, but he was not present at the last meeting. Wilson Robertson claimed to be on our side last year, but since he was re-elected, he has apparently forgotten!

District 1--Wilson Robertson - - Office: (850) 595-4910 [email protected]
District 2--Gene Valentino - - Office: (850) 595-4920 [email protected]
District 3--Lumon May - - Office: (850) 595-4930 [email protected]
District 4--Grover Robinson - - Office: (850) 595-4940 [email protected]
District 5--Steven Barry - - Office: (850) 595-4950 [email protected]

Edited to add: Also, it is the open forum where the public can speak that starts at 4:30. The regular meeting starts at 5:30. If you can't make it early enough to speak, or to sign up to speak and turn your 3 minutes over to someone else, and just want to sit with us as a show of numbers, that is also good!

This is why my standing policy is to vote out any incumbents on election day!

It seems I'm in District 1, so I'll be calling Wilson Robertson on Tuesday morning. My coworker and his family who also keep chickens live in District 4, so I'll talk to them as well. I have friends in District 2 who keep chickens as well and so do their neighbors so I'll make sure they know too.

I'm in Wilson's district, too, and that was my gut instinct, especially after the stunt he pulled over the Equestrian Center! He was sooo reassuring that he was supportive of our cause that I held my nose and voted for him. Now I'm kicking myself!

That's how we learn from our mistakes! ;) I just have inherent distrust of politicians. There need to be term limits in place and there should never be professional politicians, but I'm not here to start a political debate, I get more than my share of that at work! :)
