Depending on the size of the dog, and their desire to get at what they want, those invisible fences might not work at all. I have seen large dogs just amble through them shake their head to clear the sting and mosey in without a second glance. It sounds Luke your pooch is adamant about your chicks.

My dog is a big dog, but Irish setters are Tall rather than bulky so it may still be OK..

I haven't had any luck with the invisible fence any dog I have had act's as if it was never there or want to fight it. And they will not keep out anything else out. If it does work it only works with what you have the callor on. They coast more then the hot wire does. With the hot wire you don't have to buy the fantsy post to run the wire. I use pvc pipe and warp the wire around it. The pvc can be scored to what you want or used like a stake. Wish you the best of luck

I had one at first and once they learned it was fine, so much so that i didn't need the fence after a short time, and all was peaceful for a couple of years. But the problem is that i now have 6 coops and i had to move them to a different part of the yard so the grounding rod is well over 300 ft away, and in south florida there is 6" of dirt and then coral rock under, last time i used rebar for poles, but had to rent a jackhammer to put them in (not something i want to do again. ) Still, I have been thinking that i can string the wire around some of the trees and nail the plastic holders to the trees, that would reduce the number of poles i had to have. But i would have to use the two wire system instead of a grounding rod and run a really long extension cord.. i think this will be my first try with a quick and dirty setup to see if it works with the two wire..

We have two rottweilers and a buried wire fence... it works amazing, we never have to worry about them. Now, they dont even have to have the fence on, and still,wont leave. If a deer is running through our woods, which is just over the fence, the dogs will run up to it and stop right before the collar start,beeping in warning

This is encouraging , My Gordon Setter is not so much trouble around the chickens unless she gets all worked up when the other one starts, but she is very stubborn and unwilling to do what i ask (typical of gordons). My irish setter, the cause of the problem is always ready to please and his tail never stops wagging... BUT, when i am not around he does all the sneaky stuff he is not supposed to do. I'm single and the last of my grown up girls just left home so i'm in no way ready to give up my doggy companions. I have to find a solution. And besides i have no predator problems because the dogs see to is that yard is empty of critters, except for the squirrels that stole all my lychees this year LOL!!
