FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Hello from Panama City, FL!
I'm planning my first flock next spring. In the meantime, I spend hours on this site reading and studying. I especially like to read the What Breed/Gender? thread. I try to guess the breed/gender before reading the comments and then check if I'm right. I'm hoping it makes great practice for next year.
One thing I'm considering for a coop that I'd like opinions on. When we purchased our property, there are a pair of permanent dog kennels. They are about 4x4 each, roofed, floored with 2x6 lumber, fenced with chain link, about 2 ft off the ground, have people gates, and have their own dog house inside. Am I crazy to want to convert these to a chicken coop?

I am a firm believer in repurposing items and structures. I would suggest to not overcrowd them while they are going to be in a 4x4 area, a good rule of thumb is a minimum of 4 sq ft per adult bird in a coop and approx twice that in a run or yard otherwise you run the risk of feather picking and cannibalism. Run a 12" -24" tall section of hardware cloth around the bottom perimeter to limit the risk of predation, they tend to stick their heads through the wire, and to keep any chicks from slipping through the chain link. I would suggest 1x1/2 or 1x1 as anything bigger would defeat the purpose and anything smaller tends to be difficult to keep from getting fouled with dirt and chicken mess. Finally, maybe put some cheap linoleum down on the wooden floor to facilitate clean up. I transformed a 10x10 chain link dog kennel into a chicken tractor several years ago and while my flock has outgrown it's dimensions I still use it as a brood pen. I'm sure others on here will be happy to share their experiences and will have some great advice for you. Good luck.

I'm in Chiefland here. I am patiently waiting for my first eggs! My rooster is learning to crow, and my chickens, hatched in my second grade classroom on May 7th. I have three hens and one roo. There is one mutt, and three are Blue Cochins.

Wow. I am a native Tampa, FL 'girl' and had to look up to see where Reddick, FL was. So many small towns I am not familiar with. I now live in Spring Hill, FL and visit my brother in Ocala on occasion. Still finding my way around BYC and have learned so much already from these pages. Welcome to FL!

I have 8 beautiful girls (8 different breeds) getting ready to lay soon. I also just obtained 4 other chicks and 4 guineas and will be getting 2 Blue Silkies this weekend. Will raise the new little ones together and then incorporate them all together eventually...hopefully. Yes, I have Obsessive Chicken Disorder. :)

You are just down the road :) Welcome.

Hi there, I just saw your post replying to my post about my suspected Roo. So you think this might be a pullet?? I am checking out the links you sent. We see little buds starting on his/her legs too. We were thinking those might be spurs.
