You will need 16 square feet IF you ABSOLUTELY do not plan on adding any more hens to your flock. I am working on a broodier that could double for a coop for 4 hens. . . .

I should have it done by this weekend. I had home depot pre-cut all my wood. Then I just have to use Dh power drill to assemble it . . .

I'll post pictures of it when I finish it this weekend.

I did this one last weekend. The one I am working on now is the "NEW and IMPROVED" model.
Here is the picture of last weekend's project. OH . . . I am making plastic storm windows to go over the screens in the winter. I still need to cut a few pieces of plywood to go in the bottom of the broodier for the winter weather too.

HOWEVER, in the summer - - - I like to provide as much ventelation as possible.

Here is a picture of the inside - - - without the removable plywood flooring. I think the "new and improved" is even better - - -BIGGER and has peaked roof design. . . So, I'll let you choose which you like better after I can photos up of the second one. . . I'll put a cut list together for you too.

Do you have the ability to RIP a 2 x 6 x 8 down into three 2 x 2 x 8's? This is where you can save some money. . . . .
2 x 6 x 8's are $5 each at Home depot and 2 x 2 x 8's are $3 each at Home Depot.

On Both brooders - - - I allowed myself 2 sheets of plywood for the roof and sides. . . With the second one. . . NOTHING is left over . .. So, it maximizes your wood.

HERE IS A PHOTO of the inside of the First One. . .

IT IS EXTREMELY EASY to build. I put it together in ONE DAY. I had Home Depot pre cut the wood for me.

OH - -- and I am totally a NEWBIE / novice when it comes power tools.

The second one is following the same construction design, just better dimensions AND improved roof AND added a second door at the BACK of the brooder so that I could get chickens out of the brooder who were trying to avoid me . . . . .

I am going to use a $13 piece of plastic CLEAR roofing material AS my STORM WINDOW for the screens. That should be all we need to insulate / maintain warmth in the winter months for little chicks. It will stop COLD DRAFTS during the winter for adult hens too!
