FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Thanks everyone for your kindness. Police were not going to report to animal control, so hopefully no problems there. Never know about neighbors. According to police neighbors were not happy with police response that we were in our yard, protecting our pets and potentially me and it was perfectly legal.

Right now I am too upset to think about replacing my girls. It may be too traumatic on my survivors. We are going camping for the weekend and I will think about adopting others and talk to John. It will probably be best if we wait until the end of summer. We will be gone a good part of summer and our good neighbor and chicken co-owner will have to take care of girls. She is almost 80 and may be better to wait. We have to think and talk about it. Still have to tell my little Erin (6 yrs old) . Tonight I am glad she lives in VA and not here, she raised these from 3 days to 6 weeks when she returned home. She calls a couple times a week checking on her girls.

We're in Grant. No chickens, yet.

Hi Carol,

I'm so glad the police rightly took your side. So horrible! I hope the neighbors don't get stirred up about this. Are you friendly with any of them? I would share your experience with everyone you can before the neighbors with the dog starts talking and shaping matters to suit their side.

I come from Iowa originally and when a strange dog is on your property killing your animals/pets you can shoot it. It is veiwed as the neighbors fault for not controlling their dog.

Wow, that is great to get such positive exposure! Looks like the weather was a lovely on the west coast of Fla as it was here on the east. I spent the day processing roosters with a few other chickeeneers. Which may be why I have this one question about the swap: it mentions in the paper that folks can't keep roosters in your community, yet there were a lot of folks buying what I'm guessing are straight-run chicks. And talking about giving them names and looking forward to getting the fresh eggs from them. Were most of the chicks being sold straight run? Do folks there have a good Plan B for all the unwanted roosters that they could have? I'm not trying to be critical, just curious...

We had quite a few hatchery sexed ones, and some folks bought ones old enough to tell if they are pullets. Dixie Birds and Martin Farms in Largo both take back any roosters, and even though it isn't technically allowed, some do end up staying permanently if the neighbors don't complain! Otherwise they use craig's list, and I have a friend who does process them. Besides, even though roosters are allowed in other areas, it's not like all the roosters can stay! Pretty much everyone who gets into chickens needs a rooster plan, no mater where they live. I took my four to swaps, personally.
