LoL Jess, eventually you have to turn that bator off, and stop adding new chickens to your yard. Just wait till all of those hens start singing their egg song.

hope none of them are as loud as a few of ours girls are.

I will be selling off some of the hens and keeping at 12 or less total. I am just deciding who I like best, who lays best and who gets along best with everyone else. I have ONE more batch of eggs that I will be hatching this year. The replacement for the rotten exploded egg batch.. then I am SO SO SO done. Cleaned off my patio and everything.. LOL

Let me know if you plan to be near enough to West Palm Beach any time soon. I have 4 roos here that need to be processed and I can show you how to process yours. Once you learn how easy it really is you won't ever have to be troubled with finding homes for surplus roosters.

12? How big is your coop again? I know you free range, but don't forget they might get locked up for extended times if we get a major storm.

We've had to divide our yard into a "chicken" side and a "veggie" side... but we have decided this fall to give the chooks their own garden box with KALE!!!! and maybe some other veg. They ate so much of our kale last winter- their yolks were a GORGEOUS shade of orange... miss that. Do you have bees near you? DE is supposed to be really bad for the bee population. We just got our order from Burpee, and I'm so excited!! Some nice beans, beets, tomatoes...trying for a second round on squash as the heat beat the crap out of ours, and then we had pest issues this summer. Just started sprouting seeds this week! Have you ever posted pics of your setup?

I just have ants crawling everywhere & the DE was "chicken safe" but I didn't know it was bad for the bees. GAH! We have tons of bees. I could probably do so me beekeeping, but legitimately you need AN ACRE for bees in Brevard (seriously) & I don't really think I'd enjoy the harvest. For now, I'd just like to pay people for their local, raw honey. Ace Hardware near me sells some from West Melbourne. So random!

Anyway, I haven't posted pics of my setup. I haven't really taken pics of my "setup" but I should. Will go do that - woke-up late today. 7:45 is SLEEPING IN for me. Is that sad or what?

I've had excellent luck with Terro indoors for any small ants. Terro is just a borax/sugar mixture that kills off populations. I was considering trying more of that outdoors, but it's really not for outside. They sell a more hardcore pesticide for outside & I am trying HARD not to use non-organic pesticide. I haven't tried that "insecticidal soap" yet. Maybe I'll pick some of that up today. So much to do... Also I remembered how much I like turnip fries & turnip greens.... so I'll be buying some of those seeds, as well.

By the way, if you got one of those YES! Shopping papers (usually would just trash it but lately I've been finding good coupons in what looks like junk) ... it has a yellow Kitchenaid mixer on the front page.... there was a 50% off anything $30 and under at Ace. Well I was excited!!!
