FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Tampa is 3 hours if I had a car and drove like I did to make it in time for the auctions.Doing 85 & 90mph! I know I was flying below the radars.

According to Mapquest, Apopka is 2 hrs from St.Pete, so about 20min less from Tampa! I've still got my Sumatra boy to find a home for!

I only get two weekends off every 8 weeks so it's hard for me to make swaps. That said, I have Oct 15 & 16 off. Flchick, chicsinthesun, you could meet Juan on I-4 in Tampa and then you both could head east and meet me on I-4 in Lakeland and we could all travel together to Apopka! If ya'll wanted to...

edited to add: I'm getting all you versions of florida chick names confused. I'm referring to whomever lives in St. Pete whether that's one or two of you and then we could even meet someone in Orlando!

Our long streak of good fortune ran out last night. My youngest daughter's precious Roman Tufted goose was chased down and eaten by something. She was the sweetest thing - just turned up on our doorstep (as a gosling) after a wicked storm last winter. I've just buried her, and we're each trying to process the grief in our own way. She wasn't penned up on our partially fenced acre property because she was so large and agile we really didn't think there were any predators that could take her down...plus she considered the neighborhood Muscovies "her flock", and she was very protective of the young ones.

The question for my fellow Floridians is: what could have done this? I've talked to the neighbors (who also loved Goosedown) and no one heard a thing. She ran from our back yard, across the street and two houses down to try and escape. The neighbor who found her and put the remains in a plastic bag said the head was gone, wings removed, and the flesh was eaten from the breastbone. I even found broken pieces of bone scattered in the grass.

My first thought is dogs, in which case I'll call animal control to file a report, but what about coyotes? We live west of Ft. Lauderdale, just a few miles from the Everglades - each property consists of an acre or more. We've lived here over a decade, and I've never heard of any coyote sightings, but stranger things have happened. Fox? Could a group of foxes do that?

I appreciate any input, because now I feel paranoid. I'd like to know what I'm dealing with so I can protect the rest of my feathered friends.

The flock of Muscovies, who had fled over the fence to a nearby lake, have all come back. The amazing thing is they are sitting quietly under the avocado tree where I just buried Goosedown. This isn't something I've ever seen them do. I don't even know what to make of this behavior - it's really touching.

If her chest cavity was eaten it was a Bobcat prowling around because I have had the same problem. And sometimes a coon will do that. But only a Bobcat will cover the remains and come back for them later.Sounds to me that you have coons & Bobcats in your area. What I had done was set a coon trap out back and bait it with a can of sardines but try your best to tie the can down and the cage because both coon & bobcat will move the trap very easy. Why I say sardines is cause the smell of them will travel a long ways.I have caught plenty of both Coons & Bobcats.

Wow, well...I know we definitely have coons, but I would have a heart attack if I saw a bobcat in our neighborhood. Anything is possible, though, with the Everglades being so near. I've noticed my two cats are neurotic about wanting to come in at night lately - I'm sure they know something I don't. I appreciate the input. I just built Fort Knox (10x10 kennel) for my new layers, and now I'm trying to think like a predator to fortify it any additional way I can. My bantams come in my garage at night (no room for a car) - just can't risk it.

I have lost so many chickens to Coons & Bobcats but where you are they are looking for something new to eat.Bobcats are territoryal so that means you either have the mother and her little 1s or a male roaming alone. But Coons are very mean and they will attack you,So be very careful if you see a Coon.I've seen 2 of the in a tree trying to get into my coop & I went out there to see what the roosters were squaking about and looked all around & there they was looking back at me ready to attack. But any animal is more scared of you and hate to be cornered. So they will attack if they feel threatened.

Since I was thinking dogs, setting a trap hadn't crossed my mind...but it's certainly worth a try. At best I'll catch a predator, the worst that can happen is I catch (and release) my neighbor's cat! I'm sure sardines would lure just about anything.
