I received 7 WFBS LF on Thursday!!! from Lund Poultry. I thought I posted it here.. not sure. The other one in Spring Hill never answers my emails (3). They hatched 4, but I guess they're busy or keeping them?  They truly are LARGE fowl, these chicks arrived big and are already nearly twice that in size.

Terry Lund is really awesome, called me to make sure I picked them up from PO, and gave me great info on the breed and we also talked about conserving heritage breeds. He even punched their toe skins so I can see that they came from 2 separate pens! I'd recommend them to anyone looking for a heritage breed to save. Lund Poultry in Wisconsin. They're not a hatchery.

I still got your idea of real birds! The Rock Garden is nearly ready, or the Barred Rock Cafe'.....

Besides, I only have LF, the real sized chicken. No bantams... JK people.. JK!!!
I think the Navas should help me raise up WFBS, they'll at least know what those birds are saying.......   Maybe I'll record the chicks, email to Nava family, get a translation...


 

I guess I had forgotten that. I am interested in possibly getting WFBS myself....but still not committed.

Someone please help!!! Something got into my coup yesterday early morning & attacked Luna, my broody Japanese Bantam Cross; && cracked open her eggs along with my silkie Sparkle's eggs she was sitting on. I am going to try & get a few pictures of the aftermath, & my poor Luna. What ever it was really messed her face & beak up. I don't know what to do for her. We brought her inside & made her a nest in one of my boys old baby bath tubs w/ a little things of water & feed. Her eyes are swollen shut & her beak looks "out of place"... I don't know what to do for her. We can't afford to take her to a vet, but I don't have the heart to put her down. She is my 2 year olds pet, he loves her so much & is devastated right now... Any ideas as to what got in? I am thinking a raccoon...

I'm sorry! From what I have read, clean the wound, put neosporin/triple antibiotic ointment on the wounds, NOT THE CREAM WITH CORTISONE. Keep warm, dry, offer food and water, and hope for the best. I've seen and read some truly awful wounds heal up. Chickens can bounce back remarkably. I guess what did it is not as important as saving them now and reinforcing for later. NO CHICKEN WIRE!!!

Awww, I'm so sorry for your birds, your son & for you too. That sounds like "opossum" to me, they like to eat eggs and will do that to setting hens in order to get to their eggs. If it was a raccoon it would have probably eaten the hens instead. Opossums tend to attack heads & faces, probably when the hen is defending her eggs the opossum bites back.

Post about it on the Emergencies section, show photos if you can. Certainly there have been cases when chickens make remarkable recoveries, and this may not be as bad as it seems. There's a lot you can do by just cleaning the wounds, applying antibiotic ointment, and keeping the bird in a warm, dark, comfortable place.

But you may have to help end her suffering if it's so bad that she doesn't show improvement soon. Perhaps there is someone you know who would do it for you if you cannot bear to do it yourself. If I were closer I'd help your birds Cross The Road if they needed that.

I prefer the LF myself. I met someone here in North Florida that had the bantam ones but they just didn't do much for me.

Thank you! I cleaned her the best I could & kept trying to get her to eat or drink, but I think her 'jaw' was broken... My son & I sat on the couch with her trying to give her comfort (which she seemed to love like old times) and passed in her sleep in my arms.

This is so hard on him but I am glad that he got to tell her "bye" & love on her in her final minutes. When I told him that she had passed he started to cry & then asked me if she was with my Uncle who passed away yesterday from his battle with cancer up in Heaven. I simply told him yes... Then he kissed her wing & took her to my husband to bury... So sad but I am glad that she is not suffering anymore.
