FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Hi there!

[Today this is Madeline popping in for the Spring Hill Heritage Poultry Conservatory - we are actually two "entities" (Meaning me - "MadelineHere" and the Conservatory. I just do a lot for the Conservatory online. (The Conservatory is in Spring Hill and unless I'm volunteering there - I'm not.)

That's what I do for a living and all - getting folks online - so it's how I donate my time to a great non-profit.

Some days the person writing here might be the Director - Sandy (Sandy lives on the property) and some days perhaps another volunteer - I'll always try to have folks initial their posts so you know "who is who."

By the way, you all are welcome to come visit. And volunteer too.

Anyway - Just wanted to get us on the "500 list" and Sandy is too busy working with breeding peacocks today...

We (the Conservatory) have some pages on BYC that I had started to set up - but I need to revamp them - they were done "Pre-website."]

So here's ABOUT US:
Classes, Courses, and Meetings

We're going to be giving Chicken Care classes - Basic - but if there is a call for intermediate, or even advanced, we may be setting that up too. And if there's interest:

Looking for a place to hold a chickeny meeting? We're working on that.

  • We have a nice big shaded porch about 12 x 40 - attached to "the bunkhouse*" on the adjacent property to most of the fowl. (*Taking ideas for a name actually...).
  • This area:
  • is away from being in the middle of the chickens
  • has a dedicated for meeting use of
  • refrigerator,
  • kitchen,
  • and bathroom.
  • Electricity of course.
  • Can be used after sun down.

We are just getting this more formalized this Spring. And of course we could use some donations -

(Anyone have any folding tables or chairs that need re-homing?)

~ You don't need to be close - chances are we can get someone to go get 'em if they are somewhere in Florida... (or Savannah - we have volunteers there..)
Some of the stuff we are doing already

  • We are helping Hernando County Fair with their poultry exhibit by supplying the chicks. And we love to enter Poultry shows, so if your having one or know of one, let us know.
  • We are also starting to help families who are doing home schooling, and other groups by having them come out as a "fieldtrip". Let us know if we can help you there.
  • We've supplied chickens for 4Hers to use in Showmanship competitions.
Heritage Poultry breeds - we believe in helping these breeds continue to exist.

  • We've shown un "dubbed" roosters in APA shows.

What we are starting to do:

  • We will be getting / collecting some lesson plans and educational material in the near future from places like http://albc-usa.org/ (The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy) The http://www.nehbc.org (New England Heritage Breed Conservatory), Auburn University, etc. (And welcome ideas.)
  • We trying to get a bit for all ages - from embryology posters to simple but fun egg shell crafts. (Idea - bring your children or elderly parent by and then go home to make one of the simple crafts possible from the eggs collected here!
  • Participating in Chicken Swaps and similar events - to expose people to breeds other than the typical commerical layers often the only choice found at feedstores. Many Urbanites don't know a Rhode Island Red from Foghorn Leghorn... And have no clue that there is a variety of breeds to choose from etc. (Doing a swap? - Lets us know.)

For the elderly or physically challenged:

One of our directors is handicapped and it really brings home how chickens can brighten a life and be less challenging then say, horses. And we also see and experience the kind of challenges keeping chickens can present - so we are working on making our Conservatory less of a challenge and training up some very friendly chickens. We'd be happy to help people with handicaps figure out how to make chicken keeping easier for them as well.

Chicks for Chicks -

This is a program we are working on. The idea is to help women (and guys too!) get back to being able to keep a few chickens in their backyards. Something folks have done for centuries. Chickens in our backyards have long been a way to get healthy fresh eggs and, maybe, a little "pin" money as some grandmothers might have said...

Battery Hens --

We hope to be able to start "re-homing" some of the hens that would be put to death because they are past their egg producing peaks (which means they still lay A LOT). These hens live horrible lives from the moment they are hatched. We have seen that other programs around the US and UK are providing some of them a better life which includes some humane treatment. We think that the battery hens may be a perfect match for someone who needs a hen because of zoning laws and can provide a little kindness.

Thanks for reading all that -

Woooo. How's all that for a mouth full? Well, we have excellent heritage poultry stock*, we have the room, and we have the desire to help. (Our Mottled Houdan Hen just won Reserve Grand Champion at the 2012 Fair!)

We could use hands, minds, etc. to build a coop, collect eggs, etc. We could use some lumber.. Oh man, I won't even go there with what we could use. If you have an idea or an item - let me just say we probably won't turn it down. (Anyone with a Golfcart or riding mower they would like to write off their taxes? Outdoor paint? Building supplies? Wait wait let me stop...)

We are not "fancy" but working on doing the best we can, and improving as we go along.

I hope I have put this in the "right" place. We want to help our neighbors and be apart of the poultry community in a positive way - so I thought - hey - "Here's our neighbors! Maybe they'd like to know!"

Talk to us if there is a project we can help with.

What happened to them poor chickens!!! I do like the looks of that splash pullet. Looks like you got a few blue rocks. Is that a splash cockerel behind them 2 poor nekkid chickens?..stan

The one on the far right, I think she's a pullet, she's just now pinking up, a few others have been pinky for a month or more, so I'm hopeful. I got the full array of BBS, more blues overall, really happy with this bunch from halo. The other splash in the middle of the picture, is a silkie pullet.

Oh, and nothing happened to them, they were just BORN BEAUTIFUL!!!
