just popping in-I am at work right now, so I can actually post from a computer (see, I really can spell and write complete sentences lol)

Anyway, I am SO stinking excited about my coop being almost finished. I know I am a total nerd getting on here just to say it's almost done, but you seasoned veterans know us rookies are starry eyed

Anyway, quick question to those of you with BLRW's. If you have or had them, did you like them? Were they good layers? What about the rooster? Was he high maintenance? was he aggressive? I saw one yesterday, they seem HUGE but are they pretty standard?

Also, I am hearing conflicting things on turkeys. Someone said I have to have 2 so they don't die of loneliness. I have heard that they can get a disease from chickens if they are penned together. What do you guys and gals think?

When I had my farm our chickens and turkeys free ranged together but were housed in seperate coops.I never had any problems but you do have to watch out for blackhead disease.Blackhead is mainly a concern for younger turkeys.Chickens can be carriers but rarely suffer from it,younger turkeys are less able to fight off the protozoan.

Hi All,

Sorry I haven't been on. I lost my old friend last night. I got home from work after 7:00pm and went out to feed. Found my old brood mare dead, she was still warm so it must of happened just before I got home. She was a Rocky Mountain Horse and one of the original foundation mares for the RMHORSE Breed. She was at least 26-28 years old. Born on a mountain and certified as a foundation mare when she was an adult, so not sure what year she was foaled. Looked like an heart attack (no thrashing). Looked like she had a peaceful death. I sure will miss my Bridget girl.... She was my 14.2-16 hand girl.


Thank-you for a wonderful time in my life Bridgie, and for BayBaby her daughter who will carry on your legacy. I will meet you again at the Rainbow Bridge my friend.

Maye, I am so sorry for your loss. There is nothing like the bond between a horse and owner. Remember the good times.

It's good to be informed BEFORE you get chickens.

They won't need a coop until at least 6 weeks (until they are completely feathered out)

Be careful mixing different ages. 1-2 week old chicks could get killed or injured by chicks older than them. Adults and chicks should not be mixed; not just for injury sake, but for diseases sake.

Thank you! I have been researching like crazy and several books and sites are conflicting so I thought it would be better to ask people that actually have experience.

I am so excited to get started with our chicken adventure but I don't have my coop yet so I didn't want to get ahead of myself either.
