hoping someone has some experience or advice. It seems that with everything being said there are always fleas. My dog and cat are on medication for fleas and ticks, but I just moved my chicks outside last weekend. They are 2 months old. I noticed them scratching and thought I saw a flea jump off. I did let them free range for a short time in the yard close to the coop the last 2 nights. How do you control this? If the fleas are just there how do I keep them off my chicks??

I would give the birds a flea bath to start with. Do you treat your yard for fleas? Are you sure they are fleas? Did you do a good inspection to make sure it's fleas you're dealing with? I spray my coops with permethrin spray. It is a broad spectrum spray and will kill fleas, mites, lice to name a few. I spray their coop thoroughly in and outside of the nest boxes, on and under the roosts, ceiling, floors walls, etc. Permethrin spray will kill the pests but not the eggs so repeated sprays are necessary. Good luck...

I have not treated for fleas and other than what the cat or dog pick up I don’t ever see them. I was going to have a treatment done on the lawn then I got worried it wouldn’t be safe for the chickens if they ate the grass . In the past I have used garlic barrier spray for mosquitos but it also stops fleas, ticks etc . I had good luck with it and it’s safe so I think I’m going to order a jug and spray my yard. (I’ll smell like an Italian restaurant for a bit but oh well lol) I’ll pick up some diatomaceous earth this weekend for them as well. Hopefully I can nip it before it’s a big issue .
