Will be bringing for sure:
Marans straight run, they are 1 week old right now
Polish, white top hat blues straight run also 1 week old
A few call ducks, couple weeks old, to just starting to feather to juvenile fully feathered (white, grey, & a few assorted colors)
EE chicks, just put on the ground to free range some
OE chicks same as above
Possible Ameracauna Lavender and lavender split (taking my picks from them this week)
We also have bob white and courtnix quail, but won't haul them unless requested.
The Midget White was originally bred as a table bird for the smaller family. By Thanksgiving the toms should weigh in the neighborhood of 15-16 lbs if you feed them right. They'll butcher out to 60-65% of their live weight. The hens should be in the 8-10 lb range live weight. Add another five pounds or so at full maturity.
Here is the best resource on heritage breed turkey raising that I am aware of on the Internet.
Pretty much any of the heritage breed turkeys make good meat birds though the Royal Palms won't usually give as nice a carcass as they were originally bred for show birds. It's mostly a matter of deciding what size of turkey you want and what color you like.
The only significant difference between turkeys and chickens in their upkeep is that turkeys need a higher protein feed than chickens if you want to get the best growth out of them. If you have a mixed flock I'd suggest doing something like Purina Flock Raiser which is 20% protein and OK to feed to all poultry old enough to be out of a brooder. Supplement with oyster shell on the side for your laying birds.
We just switched to flock raiser this month, as the ducklings and geese need more protein. Thanks for the link will read up and show them to hubby. Space is not an issue for us, just want a nice meat turkey. We are a family of 5 (7 month old baby) and my parents join us for holiday meals too.
Color of the bird doesn't matter either since they are for food.
Forgot to mention and show some of the bags and totes we are bringing.
Snapped these quick today, can take more if anyone wants to see.
