I live in Jacksonville in the country. Our soil is basically all very very sandy - too sandy for my garden to grow.

Is the sand good enough for Grit? Anyone else dealing with sandy soil - or should I add grit- stuff looks the same in the bag at the feed store as what I have naturally occuring on the property.

If you got 20 answers, they would probably be 10 for one opinion and 10 for the other.

How about buying a bag and see what happens? Presumably, if they don't need it they are unlikely to take much if any. If they need it, they'll take it.

I'd say go get a bag of grit. It's $6 here for a 50lb and that lasts forever. If they need it they will take it.

We are in Haines City Fl, sandy soil here also....just put down a new well so we know for a fact that there is 220 ft of sand between us and bedrock!
All our chickens (40) free range, no added grit, just what they find naturally. All are healthy.
Think about what they use the grit for then go outside pick up some sand and rub it between your palms, does the job fine!
The main thing to remember about chickens is not to over think things.
Chickens get along just fine the world over without human input every day!
