How fast should the flow be on a nipple waterer? I screwed some into a 2L bottle today, to use with chicks when they arrive. Water is coming out, but it's barely a drip, not a steady dribble like I expected. Are they defective? Should I return them?

it shouldn't "flow". it lets water out as the chicken pecks at it. You don't want it dripping, as it will make everything wet. (unless it outside)

good luck!!

oops, I'd accidentally created a vacuum

now I feel silly!

.you neeed a hole in the top.... I have automatic waters in a PVC pipe... but wanted another ater source for some new chicks we brought home in quarantine..... I didn't think about the hole until a day later.... wondering why they hadn't drank very much.... oops!!

I am glad a read this thread, I was going to make one out of a 2 liter bottle also, Now I can do it correctly. What did you use to hang the bottle ?

I created a vacuum with mine until I saw it was collapsing inward. My problem is it seems to leak when the bird drink. I have a wet area under the bottle that I had to put a gravel filled tray under. I keep needing to empty the tray and its kind of messy. Are there different quality nipples? I bought one expensive one and ten cheapies.

having the same problem here...

I put four nipples on the bottom of a five gallon bucket...then I put a bead on caulk around each nipple....I get great flow as well as no leaks

I'm wondering if my problem with leakage is from around the nipple not through it. I'm building an outdoor watered this weekend using an 18 gallon Rubbermaid storage bin. I'll caulk around the nipples to see if that helps. If it does, I'll redo the gallon milk jug I have in the coop.
