our yard looks like a war zone. There is fencing everywhere. I use the misting setting on the garden hose, deters them for a while. Cute and frustrating - they dirt bathe in the lettuce garden. They know the good stuff.
I use cardboard mulch around my herbs and it is working, though admittedly it doesn't look super nice. My veggie garden is fenced though. The wire on the ground idea works too, I've used that to keep squirrels from digging things up.
