Hi! I noticed that yesterday my young Australorp chicken was puffed up and standing around closing his eyes every so often. I just figured it was because he was cold but now he’s still doing it today. His crop is soft and pretty empty. He’s not his usually sassy self either. His stool has been a bit watery as well. He’s only about 10 weeks old. Could anyone help me figure out what’s going on? I was looking at sour crop symptoms, but can sour crop happen on an empty crop? Please let me know.

That looks like a pullet.

We need more information. What's your location?

Have the chickens been free-ranging? Where? What do they eat when out and about?

Have you checked your feed for mold and spoilage?

Have you had warm temps and a lot of moisture?

I live in SC, USA, they don’t free range bc of neighborhood dogs, no mold or spoilage, brand new bags, it went from very hot to very cold in the past few days

Any other symptoms? How about balance problems?

Any trouble walking? Stumbling?

Feel the comb. Is it warmer than your hand or colder than your hand?
I didn’t see any stumbling, just sits when it gets where it wants, and he felt colder than normal

Let's treat for hypothermia. There are enough symptoms pointing that way.

The treatment is as follows:

1. Mix up a cup of warm water with a heaping teaspoon of sugar and a pinch of salt and baking soda and give it to her to drink. If she can't drink on her own, you will have to use an oral syringe to get the sugar water into her. This should cause immediate improvement.

2. Take a hair dryer and place the pullet on her back and blow warm air under her wing pits and on her breast. Do this for about two or three minutes.

3. Fix up a bed in a crate or box with several towels warmed in the dryer or use a heating pad to make the bed warm. This is where she should sleep tonight.

To syringe fluids safely do it this way.

Photos of poop?

I would treat for Coccidiosis.
Liquid Corid dose is 2 tsp or Powdered Corid dose is 1 1/2 tsp per gallon of water given for 5-7 days as the only source of drinking water.

For this little one, I would also give an oral drench of undiluted Corid once daily at a rate of 0.10ml per pound of weight for 3 days.

Do keep warm and work on hydration.

Okay so we couldn’t do anything last night, but this morning she seems a bit better. I brought em up this morning and put it inside with the heat lamp and is eating now. It’s nose is a bit runny though. It’s poop is also very watery. I forgot to take my phone when I went to get it. Less puffing up. We can go get the corid today now. Thoughts?
