My husband and I are concidering getting ducks and I am thrilled. Our question is what happens during winter don't they fly away? I mean this may be a stupid question to seasoned duck owners but I had to ask. Could you also include maybe reasons you love having ducks? And then negatives too I guess Lol. Thanks.

Um, well...no, because most domestic duck breeds can't fly, and for those that do you're supposed to clip their wings so that they don't. You have to keep a warm, dry pen for them to stay in during cold nights.

Domesticated breeds do not fly. I believe only mallards and muscovies can fly.
I love my ducks. They are entertaining. I could watch their antics for hours. Everyone that comes over ends up standing outside the duck pen watching them for a few minutes before they come to my door.
I even caught the roofers talking to them on their dinner break. :)

Mine are not quite old enough to provide eggs yet but I am really looking forward to fresh eggs.

I enjoy working on their pen. I empty their pool each night and use the "poo soup" water on my vegetable garden. Cleaning out old straw and spreading new us easy if you stay on top of it and is good exercise and fresh air for me.
They get me outside, rather than being a couch potato.

we have 2 mallards in the coop with our pullets and they get along just fine. we have had them all since they were a few days old.....so they have been together since they were little bitty....I don't think that the ducks know they are ducks.....they think they are chickens lol
