We went to an auction today and were prepared ahead of time with a brand new quarantine coop far away from our three other coops. Our eggs are selling great, and, well...why not get more chickens? Anyways...when my hubby was trying to put them from the cage into the temp coop..two flew high high onto our house roof. :he :(. The one came back down in a few minutes and we were amazingly able to catch it! But, of course the last bird is still up on top. So, the drill and saw came out again. Chris made another small coop for next to the new ones... I should say pullets..they are 4 mths...anyways, we left the door open..water and crumbles with a ramp into it..which she clearly doesn’t need but, we thought it might help. So, any other tips on how to get her back down and caught? They clearly need a few feathers clipped so they are manageable. The coop for the new pullets has enough of an opening in the front that she can clearly hear them and she saw them go in. They are bantams. Thanks!

I would just about bet she will come in on her own. Just leave her be for quite a while.

Or fashion a chicken hook. Look it up, amazingly efficient.
I had chickens for years without one, but once I used it, you could catch a bird so quick, no time for
them to panic.

Bantamms are notorious for flighting around. Can you screen in the top of the run?

I agree with western South Dakota, let her alone for a little while, she will probably want to be with other cycens, and so fly down and stick with the others.

She’s still on top the roof..yikes...we are not entirely we are going to keep them actually. We bought them at auction and I didn’t know much /anything about the breed. Since I’ve read they are small birds who lay small eggs. We are selling our medium brown eggs..and I don’t want it to get complicated with small eggs....but I haven’t decided. They are young and not yet laying. Our run is huge..really huge. It would be wayyyy too much of an investment at this moment, to cover it...plus we plan on expanding it. I think I’d rather stick to my bigger birds? Anyways..I’m going to read about a chicken hook, because she was pricey...but, I’m not having my hubby go near the roof for a pullet!! Thanks ladies!

I love the tiny eggs from my bantam hen and plan to get more bantams! These little eggs are great for kids, or half recipes, and for hors d'oeuvres. Tiny deviled eggs are bite size and fun to eat. My dream is to have a tiny egg company. I think people who want tiny eggs would pay as much (or more) than regular size chicken eggs.

Good luck catching your little escapee! (What breed are they?)

Would love to eat those......would not love to peel them :D

Strangely, they are very easy to peel, even on the day they are laid. Maybe because the shell seems so thick and hard? I'm not sure. My hen is a Sebright, and I'd like more of them. She lays a lot of eggs when not broody, which happens a lot too, at least 5 times a year!
