Fly Problem Remedy

My backyard flock has pretty much taken care of any bug problems we've had. However, a neighbor had a sewer problem which meant he was re-routing his sewage to dump in the backyard. Along with the stench we got flies.

I am not someone who uses chemistry for such things unless it is absolutely the last resort. We were swatting the flies, then finally hung bags of water along the fence, the trees and bushes.

No more flies.

I checked the internet and discovered the water bag way seems to be considered "an old wives tale" that doesn't work.

It worked for us and we still have those water bags out there and will keep them out there.

I haven't seen this issue posted and thought it might be useful for someone else.

I tried the water bags in my coop and still had the flies. Wonder what I did wrong? Hmmm.

Would you know a good solution to mosquitoes? They swarm in our coops and nothing, short of spraying chemicals in the coop, seems to work. They drive the poor birds nuts. It's cold enough now they're not much of a problem, but I must find a solution by spring.

Never heard of the water bags. I searched and found this.

Its water jugs not bags. Some use a concoction of 2 cups H2o, 1 cup ACV and 1 cup sugar to attract them to the jug.

Further down it says plastic bags full of water scare the flies because it makes a spider web effect with the sunlight.

Thank you for bringing this topic up because I realized today that since we moved in we have created a fly situation with the pullet poop and I was wondering what I could do to remedy it - cheap and non-chemical.

We've had great results with "fly predators" for flies, and a "Mosquito Magnet" for mosquitos.
