My 9 wk. old pair have made it through their second week living outside. Living in a small coop, I turn them out in an "unplanted garden" during the evening when I get home and on weekends during the day.

Well tonight the hen while exercising her wings got airborne about 12" - think it surprised her as much as I.
The big clumsy drake is unable but he saw her and wants to taste flight as well..

All the websites I have found say Rouens can't fly but I found one site which said they can fly up to 100'. A 100' flight will put her 4 yards away.....big trouble!

So what are others experiences with airborne Rouens? Will they fly?

Mentioned the "unplanted garden" - my wife just yesterday reminded me that the garden was the reason I got the ducks in the first place as snail and slug control - now I enjoy watching them run around in it and well veggys are over rated, right?

True Rouens do not fly, hatchery quality Rouens can be smaller in size and can sometimes get sorta off the ground. Usually as they mature the attempts stop. If all else fails you can trim 1 wing to ensure they stay on the ground.
