Flying?

reds arent flyers by nature so shouldnt even try to clear the fence if you see them try you might want to consider it based on how close they get
 
I have had Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons & Sex Links to name a few, get over a 6 foot fence. Never saw a chicken that couldn't if conditions were right. I also had many get under wire fencing after they dug holes in the dirt from dust bathing.
 
The young ones are more likely to fly over a fence. My friend clipped the wings on her production reds one time, and since then they assume they can't fly and never try. In fact, the newcomers added to the flock just believe the hens and they don't fly either. She has an electric poultry fence, I think it's the 42".
My heavy breeds cleared a 4' fence easily when they were 6 mo pullets, so I added bird netting over the top. Recently I put them in a temporary area w a 30" fence, no netting on top, and no one even thought about trying to go over.
