Update: one of the eyes seems to be rather swollen. It’s quite hard underneath his eye

Should I ring the vets

Sounds like an abscess (radiation notwithstanding ). Even if you‘ve dealt with abscesses before, being right near his eye could make it tricky to lance and irrigate/flush.

If you have the option to get vet care, it’s probably a good idea.
