Hi, I have Indian runner ducks. One duck in the flock has a white growth under her upper eyelid (in one eye only), and foamy eyes (both eyes). I have attached one photo of foamy eye and one of the white growth. It appears that the white growth is rubbing on her eye, causing discomfort.

She is about two years old, regular weight, feather condition and appetite. The only behavioural symptom is head shaking to try to remove the foam from her eyes. There is no bleeding, signs of a recent scratch or recent trauma to her eye, or signs of excessive mating (with a ratio of 5 females to one drake). There are no respiratory symptoms either.

Unfortunately, I did not look under her upper eyelid when I purchased her 3 months ago… so I am unsure how long the white growth has been present. The foamy eyes started this morning.

All of the other ducks in her flock have no symptoms and came from the same supplier - I have checked their eyelids and all are perfectly healthy.

We have isolated her from the flock, started ‘vetafarm triple c bird supplement’ a broad spectrum antibiotic available in Australia containing Chlortetracycline Hydrochloride. We are delivering this via oral administration with a syringe at a rate of 12.5mg/kg twice daily. We are also bathing her twice daily in a bathtub with warm water and monitoring food and water intake. Her poo appears runnier than normal but it could be her isolation diet - she has watermelon, fresh greens and antibiotic and hormone free grain provided, along with antibiotics that are know to cause digestive upset.

We usually use ‘VetRx Poultry Aid’ for all eye issues, but there is a shortage at the moment so antibiotics are our first line of treatment.

I am taking her to the general vet, as the avian specialist is not available over the phone or email. Has anyone has seen a similar growth to the one in the photo in their poultry? I am hoping to check before speaking to the generalist vet incase someone has experienced this before and can offer some insight.

Thank you!

Have you or the vet tried to remove the white object to see if it is pus? I would try flushing the eye with saline, and use a QTip to try to get that out. Then use the eye ointment twice a day. This could be mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) which can cause foamy eye and gunk, but hard to know without testing. Your vet could use a stronger antibiotic if the chlortetracycline doesn’t work, but there will be an egg withdrawal time with either.

Thank you, we saw the vet this morning and are using 50mg doxycycline once daily for our 1.5kg duck, along with Terramycin pink eye powder applied 4 times a day (as the ointment isn’t available in Australia). She now has a runny nose, with a light green discharge so it is unfortunately a respiratory illness :( we did ask about removing the white rubbery gunk from her upper eyelid, which I agree is dried pus on closer inspection, but was advised to leave it resolve on its own to avoid any risk damaging the cornea.
