Hello all.

Today I noticed my 6 month old (estimated age, I am unsure of her exact age) Ameraucana pullet has what appears to be some sort of abscess or stye on her upper eyelid. The affected eye also appears to be foamy. Her other eye is clear and unaffected. She doesn't seem to be showing any signs of discomfort or displaying any irregular behaviors.

I have looked at different examples of bumble-eye and impacted feather follicle cysts, but that doesn't seem to be the issue here. I am wondering if maybe one of her sisters pecked and injured her eye as it appears to be a bit scabby.

Please let me know if any of y'all have seen/experienced anything similar, and if so what you did to remedy it. Thank you!

I forgot to mention that she has not yet begun to lay, so there is no indication that this has impacted that.

Has it been warm and do you have mosquitoes out now, which could cause fowl pox? I would flush the eye twice a day with saline or an eye wash such as Eye Relief Eye wash by Bausch and Lomb. Then apply a small dab of antibiotic ointment such as Terramycin or plain Neosporin/Triple Antibiotic into the eye twice daily.

We are in Arizona, so it has been on the chillier side here. However there have been an abundance of mosquitoes outside.

Today the lesion on her eye and the area surrounding her eye had swelled. I used a warm wet washcloth to clear the crust out of her eye, but she is still unable to open it. But from what I saw of her actual eye it looks healthy. It reacted to light and no longer appeared foamy.

Another lesion did appear near her nose. I am now fairly certain that it is dry fowl pox. We have separated her from the rest of the flock and been applying Neosporin to the eye.

She still seems to be in good spirits, eating, drinking and pooping regularly. We will keep an eye on her and hope that the infection runs it's course. Thank you for your reply!

Fowl pox usually lasts about 3 weeks. Hopefully she can see well enough to get food and water. I might let her have some visits with her flock so that she doesn’t have to be reintegrated later.
That is a good idea. Our flock as a whole is made up of 3 smaller groups or cliques, and the one that she is a part of is definitely curious as to why she isn't out with the rest of them. I would hate for her to become ostracized.
