I'm new to growing your own food. What do you use? How does the whole process go? What else do I feed?

Are you planting to feed hens?

You can do a search and will find old posts regarding this topic. I don't do much of planting, but I do set aside a small patch of dirt to grow leafy vegetables that my chickens love to eat (collard greens, cauliflower leaves, etc.) I also have several compost piles at different stages. I also begin raising mealworms to supplement their diet. Between the green leaves and the worms and free range, and table left over food, I think they get at least 40% -50% of their food from those sources.

If you keep a feeder full with a balanced chicken feed, they can eat what they need. You can give them wheat grass, dark leafy greens or many other foods. They will still have a balanced feed available, to get the different nutrients they need. This is a good way to start, while you learn about what they need and ways that you can provide different foods.
