Food co-op chick

For the Valentine's hatch I experimented with two dozen eggs from the grocery store.

I set a dozen eggs from Trader Joe's and ended up with six leghorn chicks.

I also set a dozen "cage-free" eggs from the local health food store. I was just hoping they were fertile. They were gorgeous with several very dark marans eggs. Ten of them were not fertile.

One developed completely, but died without hatching. The 12th was a medium brown egg, and hatched a little black chick. I didn't know what it was until I noticed the legs.



I'm thinking at least one parent was a marans.
