Food question for the newbie. I am considering using Organic, Naturally Free Layer Chicken Feed, 25lbs (http://www.amazon.com/Organic-Naturally-Layer-Chicken-25lbs/dp/B0068SP1XE/ref=cm_cr_pr_sims_t ). Has anyone used this? I'm willing to pay the shipping costs as the closest store is 90 miles away in San Angelo.

Also, do you or can you combine it with this:F.M. Brown's Encore Natural Egg Layer Booster Daily Diet for Pets, 20-Pound (http://www.amazon.com/F-M-Browns-Natural-Booster-20-Pound/dp/B0042FMBEM/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top )

Thanks in advance!!! I have no idea what I'm doing. Lol I'm reading as much as I can!

Do I also feed oyster shells? Thanks again!

the organic stuff is ok but its a rip off just buy you some high protein laying pellets and get you some rooster booster feed and as far as the oyster shell goes its a waste of money. give them fresh leafy greens such as lettuce and give them ground up egg shells for calcium. just keep in mind everyone is gonna tell you to go with the organic feed but ive been breeding and raising chickens for a long time and tried it all and if you will follow my advice you will grow happy healthy chickens and also dont fall into the DE hog wash use real dewormer and medications for your chickens it will pay off in the long run for you

Whether or not to feed an organic food is a personal choice. I use regular commercial layer pellets. Layer feed has calcium in it so that you don't need to provide supplemental calcium such as oyster shell. Chickens benefit from some variety in their diets which is why some let the chickens forage around the yard or pasture. I toss them some odd human food from preparation or leftovers.

Some are rather strident in what they believe about how to raise chickens, but it really is not all that complicated. They need food, water, and shelter. Provide a suitable environment and you likely will have few, if any, problems. If a problem develops, manage it then.

There is a lot of information available in the forum. Wade your way through it, then decide what works for you.

The organic feed is good if you want to pay the shipping. The Brown's is just vegetarian chicken feed, the natural part means nothing. They have begun manufacturing this for the backyard chicken craze as opposed to their regular chicken feed that contains animal by products. It's manufactured her in SE PA and is nothing special. Same as Purina or any other.
