Food Scraps?

K9Dave, your composter looks a lot like mine. I think the only differences are that I don't have a top on mine & I think the slats on mine are a little closer together. I put mine out in the chicken yard as well so that the chickens could eat what they want and turn it all over by scratching. So far, they haven't left much behind to compost!

Mine is made of pallets. The door is a half pallet. I wanted the compost to stay in one spot. When it was just in a corner they had it spread out everywhere.

Eventually I may build a tunnel composter. Basically weld a tall ring that has a notch out of it for chickens to enter. The expanded metal walls prevent them from kicking the stuff out of the ring. There's a good thread here for Composting with Chickens.

This is my little compost pile. They eat what they want and then I turn the pile over.

That's nice... I wish mine was contained... Lol. Mines in the back 40 and just open...

I don't know who likes my compost better my cat or chickens The cats goes in there and scares out the moles he sits and stalks them there for hours at a time. Its keeps him very busy . The cat follows the chickens around like their mother and waits for the right moment to leap after the moles when the chicken's get their turn at it . So funny to watch.
My compost is made out of old store shelves hard stainless steel nice for any thing mine will never rot .I put three piles around the property near the gardens .

Run floor:

- wood chips, used pine shavings, dried leaves, yard waste, and basically anything biodegradable - free - 8 - 24 inches deep - composted black gardeners gold gets kicked out of 1/2 hardware fencing and disappears. Level seems to remain constant. Chickens love to dig craters and distribute it for me. I just routinely dump a garbage can full of "browns" into the run. Haven't cleaned it, ever. No mud, bugs, or smell. Run is 14x14, bottom 6 to 20 inches is pure "black gold".

Well we could switch because I'm gonna have a monster compost pile for my chickens ultimately. I live in the middle of Phoenix and have a pretty small space.

Haha... Were along ways away from each other. Lol

Wow!! I'm not sure my cat and chickens would get along.... My cat stays indoors bc we use to live in apartment and we had him fully declawed ... I'll never have another indoor cat.. Lol. I've never thought about putting out different piles, but that's a good idea.... Might work on that after I fully get the hang of the one I have. Lol.

My cat is declawed I lived in the city and moved He fits right in never goes inside much hangs with the chickens, geese and rabbits he sleeps in the barn or in the dog houses I put around for him the only thing he hates is kids he stays away when the grand kids visits . Don't let people tell you they can't hunt because no claws he does a very good job of it and he is very friendly . I reward him every day with a raw egg . also I put a small ladder up against a tree and he gets up to the top of the tree and chases the squirrel's too. He is a very good farm cat . I think he learned a lot from the chickens or it just came natural to him. He sure likes the compost pile it seems to be his favorite place to be all day. He sure don't mind the manure I put dump in their when I put stuff in their he's first in line to see it. I do keep Frontline on him for ticks and stuff have to keep him protected .

This is our cat Nemo. He is an inside/outside cat and is de-clawed. We have a doggy door for the dogs and live in the city. He jumps the fence and likes to hide in the neighbors little tool shed during the day. Until summer came that is. Now he stays in the house. He isn't much of a hunter but just hides from everything because he knows he can't defend himself with no claws. He doesn't bother the chickens at all. I've caught him even looking at them twice and ran him off so he knows they're not to be messed with.
