food/water at night?

I've left the water out of my coop for six months. My life has been 100% easier. No matter how I managed the water, the birds would find a way to spill it everywhere. If they are chicks in a single enclosure, still indoors, I'd leave it in the enclosure just so I wouldn't have to take it in and out every day (and in fact this is how I manage my brooder), but when they go in the coop at 5-7 weeks old, the food and water does not go in with them. They aren't going to drink it at, just make a mess. I also notice when both food and water are outside the coop, the birds never enter the coop during the day except to lay an egg.
