So if I buy p o l pullets & not to sure of the age can i mix growers/layers till I get first egg

I would think, p o l, should be 18 weeks. So go for it. GC

I'd feed up grower feed then just switch to layer.. they will be laying soon

I never feed layer, I feed either a non medicated grower or an All Flock. I put out a separate bowl of oyster shells for the extra calcium needs when they start laying. Layer can be too low in protein if you feed extras or treats.

Layer is usually a few bucks cheaper, mines about 2 dollars. When feeding a higher protein feed chickens will usually eat a bit less so it evens out. The cost down the road to feeding layer often is deficiencies and lower production from them not getting enough daily protein. Layer should be fed as the sole ration. If you feed anything else your chickens won't be getting enough protein unless you are adding a higher protein treat.

Pay attention to protein levels. Pullets that mature in the fall/winter months tend to take longer to start laying. Starting them on layer feed too soon can delay their development even more. Growing, developing birds need a feed with at least 18% protein content. Once they are all laying, you can switch to layer feed, provided you don't give treats regularly. If they will be getting treats frequently, it would be best to keep them on the higher protein feed and provide them with some crushed oyster shell for calcium.
