Fooling a broody hen

How long must a hen have been setting before you can fool her by placing chicks under her that you want her to raise? Share your experience please!

I had a hen who was incubating eggs when it was 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Her eggs where of course ruined so after 2 days of sitting I had gave her 12 chicks (that had hatched in a incubator). She accepted them all and only one has died (it drowned). Here they are know
