**An update** It has been a little over two weeks now. We have been giving him an injection of 1.5CC PenG, soaking his feet in epsom salt, applying antibiotic cream, and then wrapping them every other day. Last night one of the big scabs came off this right foot.
It about made me sick to pull it off. It did bleed a little but not much and it was pink and raw underneath. Just like when I pick off one of my scabs. He only has one little one left on one toe on his right foot, and the big one on his left foot is starting to come off but not quite ready. Will probably come off during Wednesday's treatment. I think he maybe able to join the flock in another week or two. This has been one heck of a lot of work and money for a free chicken. But it is so satisfying to have been able to make him better. I will post some pics of before and after on Wednesday. Thanks so much for everyone's advice.
You're doing an awesome job. Especially for someone who doesn't have much chicken experience. I don't either, and consider myself lucky to have not had to deal with an serious issue so far.
You are to be commended for you efforts and dedication!!
Congratulations on a job well done. Sounds like the poor guy has had a rough life and it is so much better now. I like your idea of feeding him treats while you are soaking his feet. I'm going to have to use that one!
Not so sure about the loving me part since I have to hold him down two-three times a week to bandage his feet and give him a shot. He seems to get less tolerant of it every time. But at least I know he is getting stronger.
The scab is usually fairly easy to get off if you soak the foot in epsom salts first the lift around the edges with an exacto blade. Then you could just put Neosporin on that wound and a gauze pad and bandage it up with the stretchy Vetwrap bandage. In the early stages, that may knock it out if it isn't very deep. The pus usually solidifies in a plug that needs to come out, but if it hasn't gotten to that stage, you wont need to cut into the foot pad much at all. hope this helps
I didn't feel any hard spots on his foot after the scab came off and there never was any swelling. Those of you that are well versed in bumblefoot can you look at the post scab picture and tell if there is or is not a plug???
