This morning while doing a pasty butt check I found a chick in the brooder hopping on one foot. It's left foot pad is swollen, no visible injury (though my first thought was bumblefoot). Upon further inspection I found a scrape on the front of its leg.
So, I suspect it was somehow injured and then developed an infection. Can I give antibiotics to a chick this small? I'll clean the wound (though the injury seems so insignificant it seems odd to call it a 'wound'), cover with antibiotic ointemnt (without painkiller) and wrap in a bandaid.
So, I used a q-tip and peroxide to clean what I thought was a scrape or peck, but what it really looks like is two teeny punctures next to one another. Could it be a spider bite? They did have some outside time on the grass yesterday. I don't think we have human-poisonous spiders around (well not many) but could a spider bite do this to a chick?
Any other suggestions?
