Hello folks! Tricky one for you. How would you go about correcting splay leg in a 2.5 week old chick with no feet please? Believed to be a crush injury leading to auto amputation.
The injury was not sustained with ourselves and we have minimal previous history. Getting around okay but right leg is distinctly out to the side. Perhaps a slipped tendon?
I’m really not sure how to splint without any feet to stop it slipping off and don’t want to damage the stumps healing by splinting in a way that may disturb them.

Any ideas? Could I splint above the hock joint? The foot stumps are looking pretty amazing considering. But the splay is a big concern since she can’t use her toes to learn to hold herself correctly.

Slipped Tendon (Perosis) can be hard to correct if at all.

If the legs are splayed and it's not a leg bone deformity which makes the leg permanently crooked or twisted. You might be able to correct by taping the legs down as shown in the threads linked below. Note, taping down is done for 24hrs or less, most splayed legs are corrected within a day, if there's not improvement, then likely the legs can't be corrected.

I would worry about taping above the joint, you risk slipping it, but photos may be helpful.

Hopefully others will chime in with their thoughts/ideas.

We use vet wrap. That you can put on the chick similar to how this article shows using a bandaid.

I like vet wrap though as I cut a narrow strip about 1/2" wide and have a way longer piece to work with. I wrap around one leg then over to the other and do the same thing, putting some of the excess over the strip between the legs, then cut off the excess. It sticks to itself around the leg, so that would work great for you. I change it on ours every 12 to 24 hours.

For chick chairs, here's a thread of ideas. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/versions-of-chick-chairs-please.1166308/ See posts 5, 11-14.

Amazing thank you. I haven’t managed to get any good pictures yet as I’ve just been trying not to stress her out too much.
I was worried about tape as she’s a feathered leg breed and so I’m wondering if I need to trim the leg feathers first to avoid them getting stuck in the tape? Also the healing tissue on the foot end 😣

Thank you! I was just worried about it slipping off or hurting the remaining tissue without feet. 😣

Here she is. The blood on her tummy seems to be from her feet. In slowly trying to clean her up. There’s no injury beneath it though.

I understand your concern, but Vetwrap doesn't hurt anything or I wouldn't be using it. You do need to use caution getting it back off but it's sticking to itself, not the chick.

The nubs are healing slowly.
I’m concerned about the splay though since she’s only 4 weeks tomorrow. Any ideas? I’m trying a hobble but with no feet it is tricky
