I can picture myself doing that.

I have two that I've used for more than five years(summer and winter) and never had a problem with the seal. Maybe I have a different brand. You do have to be careful that the top is threaded on correctly and the o-ring is placed in the top(around the plastic thing) first. I did have the bottom of one waterer crack which made it leak out the bottom(that was after at least 5 winters of frozen/thawed water).

I just threw mine out of the pen! Except for very small chicks I use black plastic feed pans for their water now.

Do they dump them out at all or mess in them? I guess they aren't ducks so it can't be nearly as bad.

I've been looking for some more ways to water and just bought three of the five gallon ones because I was tired of filling multiple one gallon waterers a couple times a day.

Buster I use one and three gallon plastic screw on base waterers and my girls do not mess in them or tip them. They will sometimes get dirt in the base of them and I just hose them out without removing the water from them. They do not leak but I am finding that they need those 3 gallon ones in the hot summer and I am about to eliminate the 1 gallons and go to 3's.
