My chicks (6-7 weeks) are foraging most of the day now. They do have chick starter in their coop. And they have grit. This may be a stupid question, and I don't have plans to pen them up anyway, but I can assume this is okay as a diet? The yard isn't fertilized or weed killed, and it is full of grass, weeds, wild strawberries, raspberryand blackberry in bud, plenty of bugs, etc. But of course probably half of their daily food is now not chick starter.

In my opinion, that's the best kind of diet there is.

I would agree with Anne. As long as they have free access to the chick starter so they can chose to eat it, I'd let em free range and get the really good stuff to eat! It's a great way to help you save money on feed too.
